Robert A VerNooy, MD, FACC
Cardiac Electrophysiologist
Dr. VerNooy joined Wilmington Health Associates in 2005 after training for seven years at the University of Virginia where he completed cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular fellowships, as well as a residency in internal medicine. He obtained specialized fellowship training in the various treatments of AFib, including catheter ablation. He also was involved in clinical research in atrial fibrillation ablation at UVA and presented at national meetings on the use of intracardiac ultrasound imaging and 3-D mapping systems to guide the procedure and minimize complications. He has also published articles on other realms of atrial fibrillation treatment options including antiarrhythmic medications. He treats patients with any heart rhythm problem, and holds a special interest in the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
Michael McWilliams, MD
Cardiac Electrophysiologist
Dr. McWilliams joined Wilmington Health Associates in 2007. He completed his residency in internal medicine under the auspices of the Osler Training Program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He spent the next five years at the Cleveland Clinic where he completed fellowships in both cardiovascular medicine and cardiac electrophysiology. At the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. McWilliams gained extensive experience in AFib ablation procedures and the medical management of AFib. He was also was involved in clinical research in atrial fibrillation ablation and presented at national meetings. He has published articles on AFib treatments, cardiac pacemakers, and defibrillators. Dr. McWilliams is also involved in internet-based medical education forums. He treats patients with all heart rhythm problems; his special interest lies in the treatment of AFib.
Beth Deeley, PA-C Cardiology/Electrophysiology Physician Assistant
Beth Deeley, PA-C joined Wilmington Health Associates (WHA) in October 2005 and has significant experience in the field of cardiology, especially electrophysiology (EP). She has worked in all clinical areas of cardiology and EP, including the care of arrhythmia patients in emergency room, hospital and critical care units, and has followed patients long-term in the outpatient setting. She also obtained additional cardiac implantable device training at the Arrhythmia Technologies Institute in Greenville, SC prior to joining WHA. Beth graduated from Saint Francis University, a top ranked PA school near her hometown in Pennsylvania before moving to Wilmington in 2004. She is a very skilled clinician and assistant to Dr. VerNooy and Dr. McWilliams in the comprehensive care of patients with AFib.
Sherman Reeder, RN
Cardiac EP Nurse
Sherman Reeder, RN brought years of cardiac experience to Wilmington Health Associates when he joined the practice in the fall of 2006. A 1983 graduate of the Saint Vincent School of Nursing in Erie, Pa., Sherman has worked in critical care nursing for most of his career and is BCLS and ACLS certified. Prior to arriving in Wilmington, he was a nurse for sixteen years at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and spent eight of those years in the cardiac catheterization lab.
Sara Hicks, RN
Cardiac EP Nurse
Sara Hicks, RN has years of experience in the emergency room and on a cardiac telemetry hospital unit as a specialized nurse and charge nurse. She earned her associates degree in nursing from Wake Technical Community College in 2001, and is BLS and ACLS certified. She joined our team in the summer of 2007.
Terri Cleveland, LPN
EP/Device Clinic Nurse
Terri Cleveland, LPN, joined Wilmington Health Associates as a cardiac nurse/device specialist in March 2007. Originally from Greensboro, NC, she has extensive nursing experience. Her career began at Moses Cone Hospital on the medical-surgical and labor and delivery units and she has over twenty years experience in family practice, endocrinology, and clinical supervisory roles. In recent years, she developed an interest in electrophysiology and implantable device therapy. Upon joining WHA, she completed the "jump start" heart rhythm/device course at the Arrhythmia Technology Institute in Greenville, SC.
Fonda Williams
EP/Device Technician
Fonda Williams has worked in the role of a cardiac device technician at Wilmington Health Associates, since 2006. She has been a member of WHA since 1999 within the Cardiology Division. She also has extensive experience in Cardiac stress testing, and in processing and interpreting Holter, Event Monitoring, and Transtelephonic recordings of the heart rhythm. She is a native of Wilmington, NC, graduated from John T. Hoggard High School, and is married with 3 children. She enjoys caring for and working with people, especially those with Cardiac devices and arrhythmias.
